Education in Germany facts

Bachelor degrees in Germany (BA, BSC, B.Eng etc)

Bachelor of Arts degree is usually of 3 years or 6 semester duration at most universities in Germany.

Master degrees in Germany (MA, MSc,etc)

The master’s title is generally awarded after studying for two to four semesters (one to two years). After your master’s degree you may choose to study for a doctoral degree.
In exceptional cases, students with excellent grades in their bachelor degree level are also eligible to apply directly for doctoral programmes, provided that other conditions are met.

Staatexamen (State Examination)

This is an examination that doctors, lawyers, pharmacists, food chemists, and teachers have to pass after the completion of their studies and before they can work in Germany.

Public universities in Germany only have semester fees, ranging from €100 to €350. Private universities can charge way more, up to €5,000 to €20,000 annually. Working time

Under the new law, as of March 1, 2024, international students, including those in preparatory programs for university, have an increased annual working limit from 120 to 140 full days or 240 to 280 half days. Alternatively, they can work up to 20 hours per week. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) announced that international students can now work more days per year and hold a second job.
