The Canadian government is planning to change the rules for student work permits, which has made some students worried. Let’s read what these changes might be, when they could happen, and who they might affect.

First, don’t worry—nothing will change right away. The new rules won’t start immediately and could take months or even until after the 2024 elections to be implemented. The government will likely ask for feedback and create a plan before making any changes.

If you’re already studying in Canada or have a visa, these changes probably won’t affect you. New rules usually only apply to new students starting after the changes are made. For example, recent changes to the spouse work permit were announced in January but only started in March, giving students time to adjust.

The government might create a list of in-demand courses to decide who gets work permits. This list will be different for each province, based on what they need. The in-demand course list will change regularly to keep up with industry needs. This means a job in high demand today might not be in demand next year, and vice versa.
