New Rules for Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Starting November 1, 2024

Starting from November 1, 2024, Canada has introduced important changes to its Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program. These changes have left many students feeling confused, so let’s break down what’s new and what you need to know to stay eligible for a PGWP after you complete your studies in Canada.

For the first time ever, Canada now requires language proficiency testing for PGWP applicants. This means that if you want to apply for a PGWP, you’ll need to take an IELTS or another approved English test.

If you’ve completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. degree at a Canadian university, you need to score CLB 7 in your language test. You can choose IELTS or another test, but achieving CLB 7 is essential.
𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐚 𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐬
If your studies were at a college level and included a diploma or similar program, you’ll need CLB 5 on your language test. This requirement is completely new and has never been a part of Canadian immigration history before.
𝐃𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬
If you hold a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D., you don’t need to worry about your field of study. Whatever your major—whether in arts, science, engineering, or another field—you will get a work permit without issues.
Diploma or Associate Degree Holders Need to Be on the “In-Demand List”
If your program isn’t a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D., such as a diploma or associate degree, your program must be on the In-Demand List to be eligible for a PGWP. The list includes 966 programs, so there are many options, but make sure your specific program is listed.
In-Demand Program Categories for PGWP
Canada has provided a list of 966 eligible programs that fall under four main categories. Here’s a breakdown to help you understand where your program might fit:
𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐢-𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝
Programs related to agriculture or agri-food are eligible. If you’re interested in agriculture or have a background in this field, this category could be a good fit.
𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞
Programs within the healthcare field are included. If you have prior studies in healthcare or medical fields, you can choose a related program under this category.
𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐌 (𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲, 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬)
This category covers a wide range, including environmental science, chemistry, technology, IT, computer science, and various engineering fields (mechanical, electrical, civil). If you’ve studied in STEM fields, this category offers many options.
𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
Ideal for students from arts or commerce backgrounds, this category includes options like supply chain management, logistics, and related fields. Arts or commerce students can explore programs in this area.

To be eligible for a PGWP, your study program must be on the In-Demand List starting November 1, 2024. Be sure to check whether your program qualifies. If you’re unsure or need help figuring out if your program is on the list, don’t hesitate to ask.
