Scoring Band 9 in Writing: Is it Possible & How to achieve it

The writing section consists of two tasks: Task 1, in which you must describe a visual representation of data, and Task 2, in which you must write an essay in response to a given prompt. To achieve a band 9 score, you must demonstrate a high level of language proficiency, coherence, cohesion, and task achievement.

In Academic Writing task 1 you’re asked to describe a graph, chart or diagram.  In Writing task 2 you have to write an essay on a given topic.

IELTS Academic Writing

IELTS Academic Writing module lasts 60 minutes and has 2 tasks, which must both be completed. Although it is recommended to spend approximately 20 minutes on task 1 and about 40 minutes on task 2, you can divide your time between two sections the way you prefer.

Unlike IELTS Reading and IELTS Listening, IELTS Writing is marked in a unique parameter.

There are four testing criteria in the assessment

  1. Task achievement/ task response
  2.  Coherence and Cohesion
  3.  Grammar
  4.  Lexical resource or vocabulary.
